Department of Gynaecology, Obstetrics and A.I., College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara, Guwahati-781 022, Assam Abstract Follicles were recovered from ovaries by dissection technique immediately after slaughter of goats at local abattoirs. A total of 316 follicles were recovered from 35 normal abattoir ovaries, the mean being 9.03±0.58 follicles/ovary. The mean number of small, medium and large follicles recovered/ovary differed significantly (P<0.05). The percentage of recovery of small follicle was the highest and that of large follicle was lowest. The rate of recovery of oocytes from follicles was highest in medium follicles (85.90%) followed by small (77.17%) and large (67.65%) follicles. Oocytes surrounded by 2, 3 or more cumulus cell layers were recorded in 56.52 per cent large follicles vis-a-vis 25.35 and 52.24 per cent in small and medium follicles, respectively. The incidence of oocytes enclosed with 1, 2, 3 or more cumulus cell layer(s) was higher in medium (91.05%) than in small (78.87%) and large (73.91%) follicles indicating better suitability of oocytes from medium follicles for in vitro maturation.
