The incredibly rapid growth of megacities has caused severe ecological, economic and social problems. It is increasingly difficult to manage this growth in a sustainable way. The urban economy which ought to have provided opportunities for raising productivity by generating employment in the high productivity industrial sector, and contributed towards eradicating abject poverty has, on contrary, portrayed different picture. With the cities growing larger, their populations of the poor are growing larger even faster. Cities, especially those in the developing nations have pockets of extreme deprivation together with extreme wealth. The per capita income hides a sombre picture of huge disparities. There are people who are very rich, rich, middleclass, poor and very poor because most cities as that of Indian are without inclusive growth. Based on the above background, the present paper attempts to understand the developmental disparities of Mumbai City with special focus on the increased industrialization of the city on one hand and simultaneous increase of slum population on the other.
