Online published on 16 October, 2013. Abstract Small and Medium Enterprise make sizeable contributions to the economic success of nations. SMEs have been on the major planks of India's economic development strategy since Independence. Today, SMEs occupy a place of strategic importance in Indian Economic structure due to its considerable contribution in terms of output, export and employment. This paper discusses the characteristics; contribution of SME's to economic development of India. The paper also discusses the constraints to SME development in India. Furthermore, the paper provides some relevant suggestions and conclusion in order to make the sector more strong and vibrant in the country.
