We have fitted the trend line of the percentage of available seats filled up in Economics and pure science subjects during the years 1996–2006 in the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) area and that for outside KMDA area. We have explained the plausible causes of this trend. For conducting this study we have used our personal experiences and the data of Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal. It is not surprising that a greater percentage of available seats for Economics compared to other pure science subjects remain unfilled every year in the colleges in and outside KMDA. But alarming is that the percentage of available seats filled up for Economics degree has been declining rigorously for the last few years. The sharp rise of the scope for alternative professional courses for the potential students of Economics and the almost equi-proportional rise of the seats of Economics honours and other science subjects are two major causes of this trend.
