Abstract

One hundred seventeen sera of chickens collected randomly from different slaughter houses of poultry were investigated for the presence of antibodies by haemagglutination (HA)and haemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay and ELISA against Newcastle disease virus (NDV), infectious bursal disease (IBD) and infectious bronchitis (IB). ELISA revealed that 98.8%, 100% and 73.5% of samples were positive against ND, IBD and IB respectively. 69% of samples were found positive against ND with HI titre 5 or more. The study revealed 85% sera had antibodies to ND, IB and IBD viruses. The results though preliminary were indicative of poor vaccination coverage in chickens being slaughtered at retail shops for human consumption.
