ABSTRACT

The study investigated occurrence of Escherichia coli in environmental samples and chickens. Out of 40 sewage samples, 2 hand pump water, 1 tank water, 10 faecal samples 04 liver and 04 samples were positive for E.coli. All E. coli showed characteristic colony morphology on McConkey’s Lactose Agar, Eosin Methylene Blue Agar and conformed consistently to IMVic pattern. Serotyping of E.coli showed O26, two O9 and O128 serotypes, and 1 rough strain of E.coli. Serotypes O120, O11 and O18 belonged to faecal, liver and spleen chicken samples. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) pattern showed that out of 8 E. coli from sewage water 5 E. coli were sensitive to Ceftriazone, were resistant to Amoxyclav, 6 E. coli and 3 E. coli were sensitive for Chloramphenicol, and Nalidixic acid respectively. E.coli were sensitive to Tetracycline, Suplhurazole, Cefatoxime and Erythromycin. Out of 4 E.coli from water samples (hand pump and tank water), 1 was resistant to Tetracycline, rest showed interdiate results. 1 E. coli was resistant to Vancomycin and Amoxycylin. In case of chicken samples, 7 E.coli were resistant to Vancomycin and out of 7 E. coli, 2,3 and 4 were resistant to Chloramhnicol, Erythromycin and Tetracycline respectively.
