Effect of Organic Carbon, Moisture and Clay Content on the Toxicity of Simazine to Oats*

Abstract

Two contrasting soils were fortified with simazine to determine its toxicity to oat plants in relation to organic carbon, moisture and clay content. The ED50 values show that at higher moisture levels, less chemical is required to cause the toxicity to oat plants, while on the other hand higher organic matter and clay content will require higher concentration of herbicide. As higher organic matter reduces the phytotoxicity of simazine in soils, the residual problem can be well over come by the application of organic manures to the scil.
