Abstract

The present study was undertaken to assess the efficacy of three drugs viz. Piperazine, Ivermectin and Levamisole against Toxocara canis. A total of 121 dogs were screened for natural infection of Toxocara canis, out of which 24 dogs were found positive which were randomly categorized into four groups (A, B, C, and D) including control. Therapeutic trials were conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Piperazine (200 mg/kg b. wt.), Ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg b. wt.) and Levamisole (7.5mg/kg b. wt.) in terms of reduction in the number of eggs discharged in the faeces (EPGF) and variation in haemato-biochemical parameters post treatment. Results showed that Piperazine, Ivermectin and Levamisole produce significantly different (p<0.05) effect on EPGF after 11th day of administration however, Piperazine had highest effect (p<0.05) followed by Ivermectin and Levamisole. In effect of all these drugs there were gradual and significant (p<0.05) increment in Haemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), total erythrocyte count (TEC) and serum glucose (SG) from 0–21 days whereas gradual and significant (p<0.05) decrease in total lymphocyte count (TLC), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) and total serum protein (TSP). At 11th and 21st day, Piperazine and Ivermectin produced significantly higher (p<0.05) effect than Levamisole for PCV, TLC, SGOT and SGPT whereas there was no any significant difference for Hb, TEC and SG. The findings revealed that all three anthelmintics were potentially effective to reduce the EPGF to almost nil stage by 11th day of treatment. Piperazine showed highest efficacy of 99.89% followed by Ivermectin (99.01%). Levamisole was least efficacious with 94.56%.
