Abstract

The genitalia of abandoned cows (n=45) were evaluated through transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) for echographic characteristics of pathologies. A total of 69 abnormalities were diagnosed in 39 (86.7%) cows by TRUS. The echographic characteristics of different abnormalities were inactive ovaries, absence of functional structures, ovarobursal adhesion, hyperechoic tissue around the ovary and cystic ovaries, presence of large anechoic structures, absence of CL and presence of trabeculae and greater wall thickness in luteal cyst. Presence of tubular structure with increase in diameter and incomplete septum was seen in hydrosalpinx and pyosalpinx and presence of thin-walled, smoothly marginated anechoic follicular like structures in parovarian cysts. In endometritis, presence or absence of anechoic to hyperechoic fluid, increase in thickness of endometrium, horn diameter and intraluminal diameter was observed. In mucometra, accumulation of hypoechoic fluid with thin uterine wall and cyst on ovary and in hydrometra, large anechoic fluid and presence of CL, absence of placentomes and foetus were observed. Distended uterus containing hyperechoic fluid and CL on the ovary was observed in pyometra. Cervical fibrosis was observed as hyperechoic areas in cervix, cervical kink by crescent shaped to half circle bend and cervicitis by hyperechoic fluid within thickened cervical crypts. It was observed that transrectal ultrasound examination allowed more detailed evaluation of genital tract of bovines with respect to different infertility conditions and proved useful in diagnosing and differentiating genital tract pathologies.
