Abstract

Physico-biochemical parameters of cervical mucus and plug were studied in estrual and parturient cows and buffaloes. Mean cervical mucus pH at estrual stage was 7.08 ± 0.10 and 7.08 ± 0.12 and at the time of calving was 8.03 ± 0.10 and 07.95 ± 0.09 in cows and buffaloes, respectively. Mean cervical mucus viscosity at estrual stage was 3.70 (++++) and 2.85 (+++) and at the time of calving was 2.90 (++++) and 3.00 (+++) in cows and buffaloes, respectively. On microscopic assessment, estrual smears revealed exfoliated cells of intermediate and superficial types with typical ferning pattern but physical content were not noticed and cervical plug samples revealed occasional exfoliated cells, neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes. Mean cervical mucus glucose, calcium and total protein level at estrual stage was 33.94 ± 03.40, 08.08 ± 0.67, 02.45 ± 0.48 and 22.00 ± 01.65, 10.23 ± 0.32, 02.77 ± 0.44 and at the time of calving was 77.85 ± 11.21, 31.88 ± 1.76, 24.70 ± 6.35 and 83.50 ± 09.01 mg/dl, 30.10 ± 2.03, 21.10 ± 4.23 g/dl in cows and buffaloes, respectively and statistically there was significant difference within the values of only calcium.
