Abstract

Two Holstein Freisian cows were presented with history of increasing right abdominal swelling since last three months. Clinical evaluation revealed doughly, reducible and painless swelling indicative of latero-ventral abdominal hernia and was corrected surgically. Animals were prepared aseptically under sedation and local infiltration anaesthesia and controlled on left lateral recumbency. Elliptical incision around herniated sac revealed loops of jejunum with mesentery. Contents were repositioned into abdominal cavity and herniated sac was excised from its base and ring was closed by overlapping nylon suture material by converting oval shaped rings into longitudinal fashion (kelotomy) for easy suturing. Skin sutures were removed on tenth post-operative day and animals showed uneventfully recovery without recurrence.
