A Comparative Study of Athlete Satisfaction among Successful and Unsuccessful Teams in Basketball

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the satisfaction level among successful and unsuccessful women's Basketball teams of Basketball South-West Zone Intervarsity Competition. The subjects chosen for this study were (females=96) 48 from successful and 48 from unsuccessful teams who had qualified for quarter finals in the Basketball South-West Zone Intervarsity competition.The test items selected for comparing the satisfaction among successful and unsuccessful teams in basketball was athlete satisfaction questionnaire by Riemer and Chelladurai (1998). In order to examine the hypothesis, descriptive statistics i.e. mean and standard deviation and comparative statistics i.e. Independent t-test was used for the present study. The level of significance was set at 0.05. In the variables individual performance, team performance, ability utilization, strategy, personal treatment, training and instruction, team social contribution, ethics, team integration, personal dedication, budget, medical personnel, academic support services and external agents there is no significance difference is found between successful and unsuccessful teams in basketball at qualifying level in the South-West Zone Basketball Intervarsity Competition. In Team task contribution significant difference has been found between successful and unsuccessful teams. The findings of the study indicated that, unsuccessful player are more satisfied in comparison to the successful player in relation to their satisfaction with the team task contribution. This fact refers to the athlete satisfaction with the members’ contribution of their efforts toward their team task.
