Abstract

The present study was conducted to study the economics of production and marketing system of sunflower in Jalandhar district of Punjab state by taking a sample of 120 farmers during the reference period 2009–10. The results of study showed that the total cost on per hectare basis varied between Rs 40900 for small farms to Rs 42715 for medium farms while the net return varied from Rs 449 for medium farms to Rs 3209 for small farms. Most of the produce was sold through the commission agents followed by processors and private companies. It was observed that share of the producer in consumers’ rupee was maximum (about 7696) in rose of channel II (Producer - Processor - Retailer - Consumer) and minimum (about 7296) in case of channel 11/(Producer Commission Agent Private Trader -Processor -Consumer). Low productivity of the crop, attack of insect pest, diseases, termites and bird, lack of technical knowledge, low selling price of the produce, cheaper imports and exploitation by the middlemen were the most prominent problems faced by the sunflower growers. The study highlighted the need for supply of quality seed, adoption of bird repellents, introduction of suitable weedicides, provision of guidance to the farmers about the drying/storage/market intelligence to ensure a better price to the sunflower growers.
