Histology and mucopolysaccharide content of vomeronasal organ in goat (Capra hircus)

Abstract

The vomeronasal organ existed as complete epitheliocartilagenous tube in adult goat at the level of between 5th and 6th palatine rugae of hard palate. The internal epithelial duct was crescent shaped with ventral broader and upper narrower ends lined by two types of epithelial linings, i.e. medial olfactory and lateral respiratory epithelium. Lateral wall propria-submucosa was two to three times thicker than that of medial wall propria-submucosa and has large sized thin walled venous caverns and numerous serous and mucous glands which were scant in the propria-submucosa of medial wall. The propria-submucosa was surrounded by a complete hyaline cartilage. epithelium exhibit intense reaction for acid mucopolysaccharide and PAS positive substances. propria-submucosa of lateral wall was highly PAS positive and showed intense reaction for acid mucopolysaccharides than that of medial wall. Cartilage was highly PAS positive and mild to moderate for acid mucopolysaccharides.
