Abstract

The pulse cultivation has been drastically reducing in recent years resulting in shortage of pulses in the market. In order to address this short coming the Government of India has devised a programme to promote the pulse cultivation in cluster mode under National Food Security Mission through KVKs. The lentil has been most preferred pulse in Samastipur to be grown in rabi season. The present study was conducted to revive the lentil cultivation employing new cultivars by KVK, Samastipur and carried out during rabi season in different blocks of the district during 2015–16 and 2016–17. The Cluster Front Line Demonstration (CFLD) on lentil varieties, namely, L-4594 and HUL-57 were taken up during each year for 71 and 173 clusters respectively. These demonstrations recorded higher average grain yield (13.25 and 14.22 q/ha) of lentil as compared to average yield obtained from farmers practice (11.25 and 8.86 q/ha) computed to increase in yield by15.09% and 37.69% during 2015–16 and 2016–17, respectively. Similarly, the benefit: cost ratio was 1.50 and 2.90, respectively. The technology gap (q/ha), extension gap (q/ha) and technology index (%) were 4.75, 2.00 and 26.38 during 2015–16 and 5.78, 5.36 and 28.90 in 2016–17. The significant increase in yield are attributed due to introduction of new varieties in cluster mode. This mode facilitated better crop management resulting in better quality production.
