Abstract

A study was conducted at adopted village of JNKVV, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Katni during 2014–17 to develop an ideal eco-friendly approach from different integrated farming system models. The aim was to identify a suitable combination of different components for maximum returns and employment generation under lowland situation of Madhya Pradesh for doubling farmer's income. Various components like crop production, animal husbandry, horticulture, vegetables, fisheries, backyard poultry and water harvesting as suggested by ICAR, ATARI Zone IX were studied. In 2016–17, the paddy yield was 4.15 t/ha as compared to 3.59 t/ha in 2015–16 and 2.65 t/ha in 2014–15. It was mainly due to adoption of improved package of practices and plant protection measures. The onion, cauliflower and chilli yield increased by 49.1, 24.1 and 13.5 percent, respectively after adoption of improved cultivation methods under integrated farming system. Similarly, the guava and papaya production was increased by 204.1 and 47.2 percent. Milk yield of Gir breed was 3.95 t lit/year/cow increases as compare to local breed with 0.58 t lit/year/cow. There was marked increase in egg production of Kadaknath breed as 263 eggs/year in 2016–17 as compared to 204 in 2014–15 and fish production of common carp as 8.8 t/year in 2015–16 to 10.9 t/year in 2016–17, and fish production of grass carp from 9.8 to 11.8 t/year, respectively. Water harvesting structures were constructed and integrated to meet out the irrigation of crops with fisheries. In 2014–15, it stored 46 cubic lit of water in the pond and the water stored increased to 87 and 112 cubic lit in 2015–16 and 2016–17, respectively. Integrated farming system also gave opportunity to engage more women in agriculture farming than men. Thus, IFS model provides new venture for employment generation and sustainable development of livelihood for Central India people. The overall result revealed that the improved practices with different crops and animal components are an outstanding approach for sustainable production, income generation, interlink age of by products, their recycling and employment opportunity for the small and marginal rural households of Katni. It also gave higher net returns and benefit cost ratio to the farmers as compared to traditional farming.
