Abstract

Knowledge in dairy farming can lead to better performance in dairy farms and well informed empowered women can contribute to sustainable and inclusive development. A study was undertaken in two villages of Karnal district in Haryana viz., Jundla and Pingli with 120 randomly selected women farmers to ascertain their knowledge level in scientific dairy farming. Personal interview and PRA methods were used for data collection and analyzed using frequency and percentage. Majority of respondents did not have knowledge in management and health care of new born calf regarding antiseptic application after removal of naval cord (87.5%), providing milk according to body weight of calf (92.5%), deworming of calf (81.7%) and feeding roughages after one month onwards to calf (78.3%). Most of the respondents did not provide dry fodder according to 2 to 3 per cent of animal body weight (88.3%), providing concentrate (86.7%), grazing as well as hay and silage making (100%). About 77.5 per cent respondents did not use feeding trough to feed their animals. Most of them possessed low level of knowledge in breeding and healthcare of animals. Therefore, this requires customized socio-technological interventions to motivate the farm women to learn and adopt the scientific interventions in dairy production.
