Transgender community in India: Myths and reality Rai Rakesh Online published on 11 July, 2018. Abstract "Transgender persons: All persons whose own sense of gender does not match with the gender assigned to them at birth. They will include transmen and trans-women (whether or not they have undergone sex reassignment surgery or hormonal treatment or laser therapy, etc), gender queers and a number of socio cultural identities such as kinnars, hijras, aravanis, jogtas, etc. In India, the outlook towards Transgender Community (hereinafter referred as ‘TG Community’) began from misconceptions and orthodox superstitions which resulted in isolation of these individuals. This perception has been evolving over the years. This community, in India, is the most oppressed and neglected group. The TG Community in India has existed with a recorded history of more than 4000 years. However, in the ancient times, they hold respectable social position, but the current situation of this community is disappointing. Top Keywords Transgender, Media, Law, Health, Exclusion. Top | |
