Abstract

The Hindu mythology respects them by calling them "Kinnar" but people on streets, call them "Chhaka". Brihannala character of Arjuna or Srikhandicharacter of Mahabharatare accepted by people but they are not accepted positively in society. Many religious texts tefer them as auspicious and have granted them the power to bless but at the same time, they are not offered due respect by the common man to live in society with dignity. Society has neglected them and they are thrown into a life of suffering, humiliation and torture. A life with respect and dignity remains a difficult dream for them even today. Cinema is the reflection of society. As a literature it explains the realities of society, and as a narrative, it presents the events in a chronological manner. It offers us a better understanding of the phenomena through the powerful audio visual medium which has high impact on the society. Indian cinema from its very beginning has shown the transgender at different times in different movies. The paper here aims to get a proper understanding of portrayal of transgender in two prominent Bollywood filmsreleased at different points of time.In this study, the dialogues and shots of those two films are taken into consideration and areanalyzed through content analysis and the outcome shows that there is a change in the trend of portrayal.
