Existing housing features and their adequacy in non-industrial and industrial area in Ludhiana city

Abstract

The present study was under taken to study the home environment with regard to existing housing features and to examine acceptability of these features by the respondents. The study was conducted in non-industrial and industrial areas of Ludhiana city. Two stage stratified random sampling technique was used to draw the sample. A total of 180 respondents were taken as sample. The interview schedule was used to collect the data. The results revealed that the maximum number of women from nonindustrial and industrial area belonged to the age group of 35–45 years. Nearly half of the sample were graduates and majority of non-industrial women belonged to higher income range as compared to their counterparts. The houses from non-industrial area were seen to be better planned in respect of activities. As regards acceptability of the feature of housing adequacy, it was revealed that large number of residents from industrial area were suffering on account of improper placement of doors/windows of the different rooms, thereby receiving insufficient light and air in the interiors. Majority of the residents from industrial area did not possess adequate space for the activities in different rooms in light of the recommendations (Deshpande 1982). On the other side, large number of respondents from non-industrial area accepted suitable placement of equipment and furniture in the rooms, which made their living comfortable.
