Abstract

Comparative study on the nutritional profile of sixty rural and sixty urban preschool children was conducted and the effect of environmental sanitation and infestation on their nutritional status was also studied. It was found that the diets consumed by both the rural and urban pre-school children were inadequate with regard to all the essential food groups except other vegetables and milk and milk products leading to the inadequacy of calories and iron. Adequacy of calories and iron was only 66% and 62%, 48% and 21% in the case of rural and urban pre-school children. All the anthropometric measurements compared well with the standards As except mid-upper arm muscle circumference and skin-fold thickness. The percentage of heminth parasitic infestation in the rural pre-school children was 40% whereas in the urban pre-school children it was only 18%. Parasitic infestation and sanitation were dependent on each other and parasitic infestation and malnutrition were interdependent on each other.
