Study of lip prints as an aid to forensic methodology

Abstract

Objectives

Of the study was to note any change in the lip-pattern of the same individual over a period of time, to check whether there were any peculiar patterns in relation to the sex of the individual, to discover the most common patterns in the Indian population.

Study design

A study of lip prints of 50 male and 50 female subjects in the age group of 19–21 with the help of a lipstick and each one studied carefully.

Results

The labial wrinkles and grooves of each of the individual was identical to the ones taken earlier. No two lip prints matched with the other, thus making it characteristic of an individual and thereby being a potential identification mark. Type I & II were most commonly seen in the First quadrant. Likewise combinition of the patterns in each individual was unique.

Conclusion

Lip prints behold a potential for individual identification. It can be used for sex determination. Still the study of lip prints need to be developed so as to prove it as a tool for identifiation like the fingerprints.
