Use, Effects and Regulation of New Media: A Study of Young Urban Users

Abstract

New media has revolutionized contact among individuals all over the world in the last one decade. Largely, mobile phones and internet are being termed as new media. These media seem to have been adopted across all age groups as well as income groups. Having no standard content of their own, portability, enabling quick two-way communication, and providing very individualistic experience to every user seem to be distinguishing features of new media. These very distinguishing features of new media are giving new experience to its users. Keeping in mind these characteristics of new media, this study has tried to find out the use of new media of youth and effects, if any they felt of new media usage. This study also aimed to find out if youth are feeling that their new media usage is excessive. This study also asked if young users have taken any steps to regulate their new media usage. Youth were selected as an age group for the present study. The study found that young users are putting new media to various users and have felt negative effects of new media. They have also started making efforts to control their new media usage.
