Abstract

To reduce green gas emissions and heavy dependence on other countries for supply of oil, electric vehicles are seen to be an intelligent alternative. Indian Government and automobile manufacturers are encouraging the adoption of Electric vehicles (EVs) among the customers. Undoubtedly, when any new technology is introduced, its adoption will take time initially. The adoption of electric vehicles will depend on whether customers are willing to admit and engross with the technology. Therefore, this study intends to investigate the significant factors influencing the intention of potential consumers to adopt electric vehicles. This study is based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. A new model is developed containing financial incentives as a new construct to UTAUT model and tested. The responses of 400 potential customers belonging to four metropolitan cities in India were collected using the online survey. Structural equation modeling analysis indicates that financial incentives, performance expectancy, and effort expectancy are significant predictors of intention to adopt EVs. The present study will benefit manufacturers of EVs and the Government to develop strategies to further encourage the adoption of Electric Vehicles.
