Unleashing the perspective of consumers toward online shopping amidst pandemic in India

Abstract

The destruction wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic will forever be remembered which fundamentally changed how people viewed the world. Every country’s government has taken successful measures to halt the pandemic where measures such as social distancing, lockdowns have been resorted. This has resulted in boom of E-commerce and has impacted people from different walks of life. The study aims to examine the consumer behavior amidst pandemic towards online shopping and their level of satisfaction and aims to know whether pandemic have induced people from different profession to opt for online shopping. To understand the consumer behavior, survey have been undertaken by forming a self-constructed questionnaire comprising of three parts-Demographic details, evaluation of adoption of online shopping amidst pandemic and their experience. Questionnaire comprise of open ended as well as close ended questions. To acquire data from respondents belonging to different age group and profession such as business, service class, students and home makers’ convenient non-probability sampling method has been adopted to. The findings indicated that the consumer preferred to shop online during the COVID-19. Measures taken by Government have acted as a trigger for offline shoppers to opt for online shopping. Products which respondents favor to shop from physical stores have been shopping online and desire to continue shop them online even after pandemic. Products such as grocery and pharmaceutical items which respondents favor to shop from physical stores have now been shopping online. Pandemic has resulted in surge of online shoppers and has resulted in emergence of local websites. Delivering products amidst pandemic was itself a challenge for companies wherein products delivery was delayed and returns mechanism has also been halted, which companies need to reconsider and improve supply chain.
