Abstract Field studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of tembotrione on growth, yield attributes and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) and its residual effect on succeeding brown sarson crop. Sixteen weed control treatments comprising three doses of tembotrione (110, 120 and 130 g/ha) with and without surfactant (1000 and 0 ml/ha) at 2 and 3 weeks after sowing and 4 checks [farmers’ practice, atrazine 1.5 kg/ha, weed free (atrazine fb 2–4, D fb handweeding if required) and weedy check] replicated thrice and tested in randomized block design during kharif season. During winter season, all these sixteen treatments considered in main plots and three treatments (unweeded check, pendimethalin 1.5 kg/ha and hand-weeding (30 and 60 DAS) in sub plots were tested in split plot design with three replications. Among treatments applied in maize, application of tembotrione 130 g/ha with surfactant at 14 and 21 DAS was comparable to weed free in improving the growth and development of maize and increased the yield attributes and grain, stover and biological yield during both the years. Addition of surfactant increased the grain yield significantly compared to the application of tembotrione without surfactant.
