Interactive effects of irrigation, tillage and mulch on summer mungbean (Vigna radiata L.)

Abstract

A window period between the harvesting of wheat and transplantation of rice has provided a time for an additional short duration summer mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) crop in the Punjab state of north-west India. However, high temperature and low relative humidity during the crop growth period results in water losses and demands more water. A two year research study was planned during 2021 and 2022 with splitsplit plot design having three irrigation regimes in main plots based on irrigation water to pan-E ratio (0.4, 0.6 and 0.8), two tillage system in sub-plots (deep tillage and conventional tillage) and two mulch rates in sub-sub plots (rice straw mulch @ 6 t ha−1 and no mulch). Deep tillage resulted in higher infiltration rate in comparison to conventional tillage. Crop biomass was higher under frequently irrigated regime in comparison to medium and least frequently irrigated regime. However, yield attributing characters and seed yield was higher under medium frequently irrigated regime. Deep tillage resulted in higher crop biomass and seed yield (10%) in comparison to conventional tillage. Seed yield was higher under mulched plots in comparison to no-mulched plots. Deep tillage coupled with mulch and medium irrigation regime yielded highest mungbean (0.98 t ha−1) during 2021.
