Online Published on 12 June, 2023. Abstract The process of scholarly publication and their study by the scholarly community has changed with the development of new techniques and systems. The ways of counting the productivity of a publication have also changed. Along with the traditional metrics of counting productivity, new and alternative metrics are coming out which are very necessary for today’s era of online communication. An altmetric analysis was done on the top 10 highly cited publications on artificial intelligence to map the amount of online attention they received on different academic and non-academic social media platforms. The data were collected from the SCOPUS database using the observation method for this study for the publication published from 2011-2020. Only the top ten highly cited publications were selected for the study and the altmetric data of the publications were collected using only AltmetricIt and PlumX tools. The study’s findings showed that the publications have high citation scores but compared to them, they have lower altmetric attention scores, which indicates that publications with the highest scientific impact only sometimes have the highest social impact and vice-versa. This means that to get a clear picture of the total scholarly implications of an article, both altmetrics, and traditional citation metrics should be used simultaneously. The study also showed a weak positive correlation between the Altmetric Attention Score and citations of the studied publications.
