Abstract

Since journalists/media professionals are heavy users of new media technologies in the times of the digital era, this study attempts to examine the use of social media tools by them. Besides, the paper seeks to examine the impact that social media tools have on the media professionals in their daily routine of news gathering and reporting. The literature aims to provide the overall usage and impact of social media on the journalists/media professionals. The paper reviews literature published and unpublished, print and electronic relevant to the problem. The paper discusses the usage and impact of Blogs, Social Networking Sites, Twitter and Wikis on media professionals (journalists). The review of literature suggests that social media acts as an important and quick source of information for media professionals. It is a platform for them upon which the act of journalism is performed. The study is based on the usage of four social media tools, that is, blogs, social networking sites, Twitter and Wikis. The study can act as an eye opener to the journalists/media professionals in exploring a vast and ever growing information gathering tool–social media. This review of the works is a widespread study of the research about usage and impact of Blogs, Social Networking Sites, Twitter and Wikis on media professionals (journalists).
