Abstract

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a latest technology which acts as a boon in the field of orthodontics. Understanding about CBCT is useful but the knowledge about the history of emerging CBCT is also very important. With the emerging imaging modalities, dental radiology has played revolutionary role in determining diagnosis, treatment plan and prognostic value. Comprehensive visualisation and records of the craniofacial complex have always been important goals in orthodontic imaging. Visualising the dentofacial skeleton in every greater detail may be seductive, but without understanding the implications of findings or having the technical ability to provide treatment at a microscopic level may mean that these images do not have any meaningful impact on clinical practice. It provides relatively low-dose, high spatial resolution imaging of the craniofacial complex in three dimensions (3D). In this paper, the literature is reviewed about the history of CBCT in Orthodontics.
