Abstract

Background

Lichen planus is the T-cell mediated autoimmune diseases that affect the skin and the mucous membrane. Corticosteroid are the most common drugs for Oral Lichen Planus management but because of the side effect it may be better to avoid the longterm use, thus trends toward drugs of natural origin like curcumin exhibits anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticarcinogenic activities.

Aim

To assess the efficacy of topical curcumin in the treatment of symptomatic oral lichen planus.

Materials and Methods

In the present study 10 patients (3 men and 7 women) within the age range of 26–61 years were included. Each patient received 1% curcumin oral paste twice a day for 60 days. Assessment of severity of burning was done by VAS scale. Appearance score (sign score) was recorded among the study group based on the criteria given by Thongprasomk.

Results

With respect to reduction in burning sensation, 9 patients (90%) showed short complete remission. With respect to the appearance score, 9 patients (90%) showed complete remission.

Conclusion

Application of curcumin can be suggested for the treatment of Oral Lichen Planus because of its desirable anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidants affects and insignificant side effect.
