Smoking as a risk factor for periodontal diseases – A clinical and radiographic study

Abstract

The presence of smoling habit in India is increasing at the rapid rate every year.

Smoking is recognized as the most important cause of preventable death and disease all over the globe.

Epidemilogical study has shown that smoking directly related to incidence and prevalence of variety of medical problems including lung cancer, oral cancer and pulmonary & cardio vascular diseases.

There is also evidence shown that smoking is the major risk factors for development & progression of periodontal disease. This study is to evaluate smoking as risk factor for periodontal diseases and compare the periodontal status, determine the extent and severity and also determine influence of smoking on interproximal alveolar bone height and compare the same with non-smokers.
