Abstract

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a very peculiar debilitating form of facial pain that leads to severe discomfort and poor quality of living, up to the extent of considering suicidal attempts, and thus the disease has been named as “THE SUICIDE DISEASE”. Characterized by brief periods of recurrent episodes of lancinating pain, Trigeminal Neuralgia is usually unilateral. The diagnosis is mainly based on the history given by the patient and the presence of typical electric shock like pain on stimulating the trigger points distributed over the one or more branches of trigeminal neuralgia at the time of examination. However, various imaging modalities like Orthopantamogram, C.T. scan and M.R.I can be used to rule out the suspected differential diagnosis. Since ages, the treatment modality of Trigeminal Neuralgia has been revolving around the use of medical therapy as the first line of treatment, as suggested by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS). Patients who are refractory to the pharmacological line of management are then recommended the surgical intervention. However, in this case report we are presenting a case of Trigeminal Neuralgia involving the maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3) branches who was put on the CARBAMAZEPINE in conjugation with the OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS (a new breeze in the management of trigeminal neuralgia).
