Abstract

Therapies involving plants have existed for thousands of years and some may be as old as human medicine itself. And one such medicinal plant is tulsi, which is also known as the queen of herbs. Tulsi is also mentioned by Charaka in the Charaka Samhita; Marked by its strong aroma and astringent taste, it is regarded in Ayurveda as a kind of “elixir of life” and believed to promote longevity. Tulsi is used for the treatment of common colds, headaches, stomach disorders, inflammation, heart disease, various forms of poisoning, and malaria. It also has an effective antibacterial potential and holds promise to combat oral pathogens. This review article throws a light on the clinical importance of tulsi in medicine and dentistry.
