Abstract Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic progressive debilitating disease of the oral mucosa involving the oropharynx and is prevalent in the Indian subcontinent associated mainly with the habit of betel quid chewing. It is associated with significant morbidity due to eating difficulties secondary to stomatopyrosis and restricted mouth opening resulting in malnutrition. The mainstay in its treatment is concentrated on attempts to improve the mouth opening and relieve the symptoms by medicinal or surgical means. Medical line of treatment is recommended for early cases (grade I &II) while for more severe cases (grade III-V) with marked restriction in mouth opening, surgical release of fibrous bands followed by reconstruction of the resultant defect is mandatory. Here is a case of grade III OSMF in which reconstruction with collagen membrane was doneafter release of the fibrous bands under G.A. and also a literature review is carried out on various options for reconstruction attempted in the past.
