Also the gingival is subjected to physical insults during mastication. Gingival defensins are one of the chemicals released by the body to overcome these insults. Objective The aim is to review the concepts of activity of gingival defensins and their role in maintenance of gingival health. Methodology MEDLINE, google scholar and EMBASE was searched using terms gingival defensins, human neutrophilic proteins, α defensins, β defensins. Results & Conclusion Analysis of literature indicates that a greater understanding of how these factors act in the healthy, gingivitis and periodontitis states should reveal windows of opportunity relating to identification of at risk individuals, prevention and treatment of disease. Top Keywords Gingival defensins, human neutrophilic proteins, anti microbial peptides, α defensins, β defensins. Top |
