Online Published on 28 July, 2023. Abstract Introduction One of the most challenging aspects of forensic research is identifying skeletal remains or decomposing body parts. The morphology of the frontal sinus is unique to every individual and can be used effectively in the identification of an individual. It is commonly used to identify remains left behind after disasters and other means of identification are not possible, radiographs showing frontal sinuses can be used for identification. Aim The aim of this study is morphometric evaluation of the frontal sinus in relation to gender and to establish its forensic importance and application. Materials and Methods The study group constituted 50 subjects in the age group ranging from 20-60 years. Digital posterioranterior view radiographs were retrieved from the archival data of the year 2021, from CS8100 Carestream Orthopantomogram machine in the department of Oral Medicine and Radiology at HPGDC, Shimla. The maximum height, width and area of each frontal sinus were determined using GIMP 2.10.30 software. Results The mean values for maximum length, width, and area of each frontal sinus are compared to assess sexual diamorphism. The sinus length, width, area and bilateral asymmetry in relation to gender are analysed. Top Keywords Frontal Sinus, Sex determination, Gender, Skull, Radiograph. Top |
