Online Published on 28 July, 2023. Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of Pb in the non-branded lipsticks purchased from different markets of Chandigarh, Ropar and Mohali. Method Thirty lipstick samples of ten local brands have been collected and analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy technique (AAS). Elemental digestion was carried out with 6mL of concentrated HNO2, 3mL of H2O2, 30% v/v and then 1mL concentrated HCL with the measured sample. Results It has been observed that lead was present in all the selected samples used in this study. The results demonstrated that concentration of Pb was higher in red color lipstick sample and lower in brown color lipstick samples. The mean concentration of Pb in all the selected lipstick sample for Chandigarh (1.15 - 4.06) mg/L, Ropar (1.17 - 5.88) mg/L, Mohali (2.19 - 5.13) mg/ L respectively. According to BIS, all the samples selected in this study consisted the range of Pb below the permissible limit i.e., 20 ppm. Conclusion The minute amount of lead concentration can also cause harm slowly to the human body and proved to be hazardous and sometimes fatal. The continuous use of these lipstick products contaminated with such heavy metal may cause a slower health risk when release into the human body and cause severe health related disease to the consumer over time which can also lead to severe toxicity. Therefore, it is important to determine the concentration of heavy metals in various samples of forensic relevance because it can cause acute or chronic exposure.
