Abstract

Upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage is one of the most common causes of sudden death among the gastrointestinal causes. Varices can burst and bleed, resulting in sudden death. The majority of gastrointestinal varices are due to portal hypertension caused by liver cirrhosis which mostly occurs among the alcoholics. Variceal hemorrhage is a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality. The role of forensic pathologist is of prime importance in dealing with sudden death. Here we report a case of 53 years old obese, alcoholic male who was found in an unconscious state at his home and whose cause of death was reported as death due to rupture of oesophageal varices, which was later confirmed on histopathological examination. We further discuss the histopathological findings in this case. Correlation of autopsy findings with histopathological examination is very important to confirm and also to understand the pathophysiology of such cases. In medicolegal cases, histopathology of such lesion adds future evidence in confirming and resolving the cause of death
