Abstract

Introduction

Burns is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. An extensive burn injury profoundly affects the patient’s physique, psyche, financial situation and family.

Materials and Methods

Present retrospective study was conducted to study the demographic and clinical profile of patients with burns admitted to our institute from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2020 (4.5 Years).

Results

A total of 58 cases were studied in this duration. The mean age of the studied population was 37.15±18.46 years. There were 72.5 % males and 27.5% females. Majority of the burns were accidental. Thermal, electric and scald burns were found in 36, 21 and 1 patient respectively. 34 patients suffered burn injuries at home. Systemic co-morbidities were present in 12 patients and 8 patients had history of psychiatric illness. 9 patients had history of substance abuse. The mean total body surface area involved in burns was 37.91±22.35%. Respiratory involvement was present in 25 patients and ocular involvement in 9 patients. The mean duration of hospital stay was 11.6±10.64 days.

Conclusion

In the study it was found that majority of the burn injury was in the adult active age group and was sustained during farming amongst males and during cooking amongst females. Nearly half of the patients presented to us with respiratory involvement as well. This study of clinical and demographic parameters will give us an insight into the ways that can be adopted to prevent burns in the susceptible categories.
