Profile and pattern of medico-legal cases in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A retrospective study

Abstract

Introduction

Medico-legal cases (MLC) have a rising trend through out the world. Social conditions, geopolitical demographics and prevailing economic conditions have always been major factors determining their profile in any given society. The COVID-19 Pandemic brought with it a special set of socio-economic changes affecting every aspect of our daily lives.

Material and Methods

Present retrospective study was carried out from 7 February 2021 to 14 October 2021 (8 months) on 224 medico legal cases received in the Emergency department of SKIMS-MC. Data regarding demographic profile, mode of injury, time of occurrence, types of injuries, time period between injury and reporting to casualty was collected from victims, attendants and the police.

Results and Conclusions

Out of 224 cases studied 158 (70.53%) were males and 66 (29.46%) were females. Out of 224 cases, victims in age group 15-25 were 93 (41.51%), in age group 25-35 were 65 (29.01%), in age group 35-45 were 44 (19.64%), in age group 45-55 were 22 (9.82%). 130 were living in urban areas (58.03%) and 94 were of rural areas (41.96%).

Road traffic accidents constituted (37.5%), assault (45.08%), poisoning (9.82%). Maximum number of cases took place between 12 Pm to 6 Pm including 62 male and 28 female victims. The least number of victims (3 females) were affected during 12 Am to 6 Am.
