Online published on 19 December, 2023. Abstract Introduction ART includes all medical procedures used primarily to address infertility in which either eggs, gametes or embryos are handled. Some forms of ART may also be used in surrogacy arrangements and genetic purposes. Hence it involves a lot of moral, ethical and legal ramifications. Earlier there were no set guidelines for running ART clinics/banks. ART clinics had been running without any checks leading to increase in unethical practices. Since India is now a major centre of the global fertility industry, with reproductive medical tourism increasing significantly, the need to bring all such services under a specific law was acutely felt which lead to the framing of ART Regulation and Surrogacy Regulation Bill. The new bill aims to regulate and supervise the ART clinics and ART banks, encourage safe and ethical practice of ART services or for freezing gametes, embryos, embryonic tissues for further use.
