Abstract

Salt tolerance of two sorghum genotypes (PSC4 and SL44) was studied at seedling stage by subjecting the seeds to 4 levels of salinity (25mM, 50mM, 75mM and 100mM). The physiological parameters such as percent germination, seedling length and seedling biomass decreased with increased NaCl concentration. However, the biochemical parameters viz. total soluble sugar content, MDA content and activity of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) increased with increased levels of salt stress. Both the genotypes showed the tolerance up to 25 mM of NaCl on the basis of per cent germination and seedling length which showed a decline thereafter till 100mM NaCl in both the genotypes. Decline in the germination and seedling length and biomass was more in PCS4 as compared to SL44 which showed a comparatively tolerant response to salinity as compared to PCS 44.
