Abstract

Field experiment was conducted to study the effect of three N levels (N1- 75% RDN, N2- 100% RDN and N3- 125% RDN) and four times of N application (T1- full dose at pre-sowing irrigation, T2- ½; N at pre-sowing irrigation + ½; tillering stage, T3- ½; N at pre-sowing irrigation + ¼ tillering stage+ ¼ stem elongation (first node detectable) and T4- ½; N at pre-sowing irrigation + ¼ tillering stage + ¼ flowering stage (½; of inflorescence emerged) during 2017–18 at Bathinda and Ludhiana on growth parameters and yield of barley. Results of study revealed that application of 125% RDN (N3) in two splits (½; N at pre sowing irrigation + ½; tillering stage) (T2) produced significantly higher plant height, dry matter accumulation, tiller density, grain yield of barley compared to 75% RDN (N1) at both locations of study. Application of 100% RDN (N2) at stem elongation (T3) or flowering stage (T4) was also equally efficient in increasing growth and yield of barley and it could be the optimum N dose for obtaining best yield results. Grain yield showed significant positive and linear relationship with dry matter accumulation and tiller density.
