Enhancing income of horticultural farmers in Nagaland: An economic analysis

Abstract

The present study was conducted in Nagaland state to examine how the income of farmers growing horticultural crops can be enhanced. The primary data was collected through personal interview. Major findings revealed that the orange growers had the highest average annual income (Rs.179723) and income from oranges (Rs.138023). The variables, land under crops, total land holding, scientific orientation, income from horticultural crops, and risk orientation had significant association with annual income. Family size, land holding under crops, total land holding, scientific orientation, annual Income and experience had significant association with income from crops. Sources of information, experience, land holding under horticultural crops, annual income, total land holding and training exposure were found important in explaining about 83 % of variations in income from horticultural crops. The study concluded that a sustained and combined approach of intensive extension programs be followed for enhancing income of the farmers.
