Abstract

Four organised and two unorganised sheep and goat farms in Hisar were surveyed to assess the prevalence of anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes by faecal egg count reduction test. The percentage reduction in faecal egg counts by fenbendazole and morantel were 69.0 and 96.4 on Government Sheep Breeding Farm; 71.6 and 96.3 on Government Goat Breeding Farm; 92.1 and 51.8 on University Sheep Breeding Farm; 86.9 and 98.4 on University Goat Breeding Farm; 65.9 and 98.3 on unorganised Sheep Farm and 59.8 and 96.3 on unorganised Goat Farm, respectively. Reduction in faecal egg count by rafoxanide was 100% on all farms except 78.13% and 36.64% on University Sheep Breeding Farm and University Goat Breeding Farm, respectively. This indicated moderate to severe fenbendazole resistance in sheep and goats in all farms surveyed; while cross anthelmintic resistance to fenbendazole and rafoxanide were evident on University Goat Breeding Farm and fenbendazole and morantel on Government Goat Breeding Farm. Multiple anthelmintic resistance to fenbendazole, morantel and rafoxanide was also apparent on University Sheep Breeding Farm. In all cases of anthelmintic resistance Haemonchus contortus was the parasite involved. Morantel and rafoxanide were effective on four farms. Doramectin was highly effective (>95%) on all farms indicating no resistance.
