Twenty First Century Classrooms: Changing Scenario

Abstract

Kothari commission (1964) quoted “Destiny of India is being shaped in her classrooms.” Classroom is considered the place where child spends most formative period of their life. It is the place where they learn the lessons of committed citizenship and humanity. As it is considered as a societal sub system any change in the society changes its scenario. With the advancement in the society, scenario of classrooms also changes. Classrooms are now advanced from only chalk and blackboard to the overhead projectors and LCD projectors, plasma TVs gradually. It also changes from teaching tools to learning mechanism. National Curriculum Framework for school education emphasized on learning classrooms because of the paradigm shift in approaches to education from behaviorism to cognitivism and to constructivism gradually. Concept of learning classrooms demands various modes of transactions and set up to provide students multimodal learning. The Present paper focuses on the changing scenario of twenty first century classroom, emphasized on changing approaches and discusses various types of classrooms in line with the changing societal demands. It also provides some highlight for use of Information and communication technology in the classrooms.
