Abstract

Healthy criticism helps in improving for the better. Nirad C. Chaudhuri believed that Hindus took a down turn because the tradition of criticism was lost. His book To Live Or Not To Live is an attempt to guide Indians towards a more sophisticated life style. His aim is to help in the development of an integrated culture. This paper is an attempt to show how the views of the farsighted writer have passed the test of time and proved their worth. His views on family, husband-wife, father-son and other relationships are expressed in an interesting manner. When compared with the other writers, philosophers and leaders of his era, we find that they all have expressed similar views. Nirad C. Chaudhuri was criticized because he deliberately used harsh language to make his point. When read after so many years, his opinions make more sense. The paper also tries to critically appreciate his views using the present scenario as a proof.
