Symbols and Images in D.H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers

Abstract

This paper tries to encapsulate all the vital symbols and images employed by D.H. Lawrence in his most influential work, Sons and Lovers (1913). The relevance of this paper lies in unravelling the symbols which would help us to comprehend the intuitive and impulsive aspect of the characters in the novel. It endeavours to unveil the hidden ideologies employed by Lawrence in the novel and to highlight the fact that how human mind works in various situations. The prime symbols and images used by Lawrence in most of his novels are moon, nature, weather and flowers. There are certain subtle images employed by Lawrence which clearly attract the attention of the readers to perceive the actual character of Paul Morel as a philanderer. All these symbols have a psychological tendency which provides an apt medium to judge the characters. It is only through symbols that one could venture into the subconscious and unconscious of human mind.
