Sylvia Plath and Kamala Das as Confessional Poets

Abstract

The dawn of the twentieth century witnessed changes in every aspect of the day-to-day lives of women, from domestic sphere to public. Despite many challenges, women came up with their profound works. Women in the early twentieth century were more active and influential as writers and artists. This research paper shows how Sylvia Plath and Kamala Das contributed in the twentieth century through their tremendous writings. Sylvia Plath and Kamala Das addressed their private experiences and feelings about death, trauma, depression and relationships in confessional poetry, or very often in an autobiographical manner. During the twentieth century, Indian writing in English had also gained recognition rapidly in the society. In their writings, they have started questioning the prominent old patriarchal domination. To an extent, they are no longer puppets in the hands of man. Theyhave shown their talent and proved it worth in both ways qualitatively and quantitatively in the field of literature and are proving it even today without any obstacle. Works of women have left prints on the lives of many readers, and it also brought change in the society.
